Sándor Szászvárosi is a key figure of the Hungarian early music scene, distinguished both as an instrumental soloist and as a pedagogue. He is a dedicated interpreter of the Baroque cello and the viola da gamba, committed to the historically informed performance of 15th–18th century music.
As a soloist and ensemble member, he regularly performs at prestigious festivals and concert venues throughout Europe, including Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. He has recorded several solo albums for Hungaroton, receiving international acclaim in the professional music press.
As a teacher, he played a pioneering role in the institutional establishment of viola da gamba education in Hungary. In 2005, he launched both elementary and secondary level gamba training at the Pikéthy Tibor Conservatory in Vác, where he continues to teach. His students have won prizes at national and international competitions and continued their studies at renowned institutions in Hungary and abroad.
As artistic director, he has founded several ensembles and launched concert series, theatrical collaborations, and educational projects aimed at showcasing the rich expressive world and historical significance of the viola da gamba.
